BYDG mum, Helen Brooker, is running the 2015 London Marathon for Diabetes UK. Here is her story...
My daughter Megan was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on 25 Feb 2014... It was a bolt out of the blue, as it is with most families. I've always run since I was very young, and 5 days after her diagnosis I was due to run the Reading Half marathon, despite only getting 15 hours sleep in 5 days that week Megan insisted I ran it, and did it for her. I followed a runner for the last 3 miles who was running for Diabetes UK, which heightened the emotion at the finish, but also gave me an idea. I said I would never EVER run a marathon but maybe I now had the motivation to give it a go. So several months down the line and I've bagged a place at this years London Marathon running for Diabetes UK, training is underway, and so is fundraising. I've been challenged to raise £1850 but would like to raise £2,500, and so far so good. You can sponsor Helen at uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Brookerbakes and read more about the trials and tribulations of Helen's training on her blog - http://runningmum73.wordpress.com Helen is organising the Type Onesie Mile, a "fun-run" event, on Saturday 28th February (1 year after Megan got out of hospital). The event will take place at Down Grange athletics track, where kids of all ages can run a mile in their onesies to raise awareness and funds for Diabetes UK (£2.50 to enter). For more information on the event please email [email protected] or download the flyer that will be included in the information packs going out to schools in Basingstoke in the next couple of weeks. There will be lots prizes and other fun activities and some silly events for the grown ups and under 5s too (onesies compulsory attire!). BYDG has received a generous grant of £200 from the Basingstoke Lions to support the 2015 trip to Fairthornes. Many thanks! AWE have kindly supported BYDG with a kind donation of £200. Many thanks to the generous folks at AWE! "AWE is committed to being a good neighbour and working with its local communities. The AWE Community Committee are pleased to be able to support this local charity and the good work they do with the young people in the Basingstoke area."
Imogen Brown, a 20-year old Type 1 Diabetic was an active member of BYDG since her diagnosis in 2007 until she went to the adult clinic. She is emabrking on an exciting and challenging trip in aid of JDRF. Alongside 19 other type 1's, she's attempting the World Record to have the greatest number of type 1's to summit Kilimanjaro in June this year. Of this group she is the youngest participant. The aim of this trip is to raise awareness about type 1 diabetes as well as show that people with type 1 diabetes can do anything they put their minds to. This will be a huge undertaking, not only because of the difficulty of the challenge but ever more complicated because of managing our blood sugars. To put this into perspective, recent training weekends have shown that this level of exercise requires her to have 90% less insulin than normal.
